Like so many other Blu-ray burning software packages, EarthSoft Blu-ray DVD Copy is not ideal for multipurpose use. A quick look at the list of product features is enough to see that this application can burn exact copies of Blu-ray movies but doesn’t provide options for customization. Blu-ray movie backup is its sole mission—it will not burn playable home videos and it will not burn data discs. We found only one standout feature that we really liked: you can choose which languages to set as default for the burned disc. Here are a few additional features related to Blu-ray movie burning:

• Dolby encoding preservation
• Auto shutdown upon completing a burn

In our burn test, EarthSoft clocked 80 minutes to burn a 25GB Blu-ray Disc, 3.2 minutes to burn a single GB, and burns approximately 5 MB per second. Although we tested faster software, EarthSoft is still relatively speedy. If you have a lot of movies to burn you will be able to get them done in a reasonable amount of time using EarthSoft Blu-ray DVD Copy. Thanks to the auto shutdown feature, you can start a burn just before bed and wake up to find it completed without having to leave your computer running all night.

The EarthSoft download is only 8MB and requires less than 30 seconds to install. There are no curve balls to worry about before burning a Blu-ray; the application’s interface is simple and easy to use, if not a bit restrictive. The main window is small and there aren’t many features to make things crowded. The two-step startup instructions fit neatly inside because copying a Blu-ray movie with EarthSoft is only a matter of a few clicks.

The biggest issue with EarthSoft Blu-ray DVD Copy is the lack of fine-tuned controls; firstly, you can only copy movies. This Blu-ray burning package is not optimized for burning home videos or data discs. Secondly, even in burning duplicate movies, you will not have very much control over the process. For example, competitors with a similar focus on Blu-ray duplication allow you to copy a disc with or without the menu and special features—that is an option you won't find with EarthSoft. But there's an upside to that as well; EarthSoft is easier to use. Not everyone is a computer whiz, and for those of us who are not, EarthSoft is ideal.

Our favorite feature (and it wasn't hard to choose from the short list) is the ability to set any language as the default for audio and subtitles. People who speak a different language in their home will enjoy this function, though for most users it is not going to see a lot of use.
